After the Project Madness

Our final project is now completed! Yes!!! The final project build was very stressful, because it involved using all the prior building skills to complete a collaborative build. I will have to admit, everyone did an awesome job. I really enjoyed the TSA experience, I bet that simulation could be a successful training site for them. Now that the dust has settled, I can say I’m proud to be a Second Lifer. 

Madness (what am I doing?)

I have so many ideas for this build but so little time, I think I’m going crazy. Let me think about this in an optimistic view point- (After I’m done with this project, I will be able to create a simulation on SL, collaborate with 3 time schedules, and teach other the same skills.)

Week 8 in Second Life

After tonights class, I am more aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using virtual worlds within education. During Dr. Peter’s slideshow presentation on views about virtual worlds in education, we participated in a discussion by holding up red (disagree), yellow (not sure), or green cards (agree) to express our opinions. For slide 4 or 5, I kept changing my opinion from yellow to green. The question, was regarding educators using SL at a novice proficiency, if other traditional teaching methods were effective. I think if an educator is going to use SL as a teaching tool, they should have time to independently explore and design effective objectives for group instruction.  SL is a great place to learn measurable and effective teaching methods through multiple mediums.

Week 7 in Second Life

Today, I learned how to make a URL provider, slideshow, and book. This task was a great opportunity to problem solve.

The URL provider was manageable; however, I kept on selecting all the faces instead of 1, but towards the end of the activity I figured it out. All I needed to do was click on 1 side of my prim.

The slideshow was a nice breath of fresh air because most of the clicks were drag, hold, and drop.

The book became a little complicated because we were not able to insert images from our materials. I learned in order to insert images into my content folder, I need to make sure they are modifiable and copyable, however at the end of class, I created a book, then accidentally left it behind. Thank you Dr. Peter for returning it.

Week 6 in Second Life

Yes!!! Prim finder! I love this new toy! I like how you are able to manipulate a prim. You can change the total faces of an object, features, and common uses. For example if you need an object that has a common use like a chair, you can select any prim and it will modify your prim. I found a direct link to prim finder 2.0-----ENJOY!!!!

Week 5 in Second Life

3D Landscape--I really enjoyed this activity! I thought learning how to make 3D landscapes is vital to our final project. I didn’t realize that most of the landscape in SL are just 2 images placed together to make a X or four 90 degree angles.

Week 4 in Second Life

Today, I collaborated with other classmates to create an annotated list. This assignment took a lot longer than expected but was very informational. I learned Second Life has several educational resources varying in multiple categories. For example:

Description: A Museum/ Aquarium of Earth System Science, marine lives, underwater Technology, and a sense of wonder. The Abyss Observatory is an international museum of Earth science, undersea technology and also the mysteries of Earth & Life in 3D virtual space "Second Life"(SL)

Review: The site is well-designed, easy to navigate and engaging for visitors. This would be a great site for students to explore. The simulation gives the SL user several tour choices. Each tour leads the user to a different location (on ground or underwater) of the museum by teleportation.  My favorite exhibits were the the underwater tour and the ocean research vessel and submersible. I would say every tour is worth experiencing.

The most frustrating part of the assignment was finding the SL URL, but once I figured it out the rest of the assignment became manageable. (Press map button> copy to clipboard> paste on a blank document> SL URL appears)

Week 3 in Second Life

Impression:

Roma is a stunning sim, I think the creators/designers did an outstanding job. When I first teleported to the sim, I was greeted by 2 main avatars, one gave information, while the other needed help.

The information avatar gave me a notecard outlining the main goals of Roma and how to socialize in Roma. As a visitor, I thought this made me feel more engaged and willing to participate because I had an outline and map. The information even directed me to a website containing more information, http://romacitizens.com/tourism.html.

The second avatar needed help to find a friend, and offering help led me on a path to find free items. Along my path, I found several items that would help me easily transition into the life style of a Roma citizen. While on the path, I had to interact with other sims and collect maps. The designers did a great job of scaffolding Roma’s jargon, customs, and norms.


Activities:

While I was in Roma, I did not see any group activities occurring. However, I wanted to participate in the LVDI ROMANI Group, but they have specific rules to follow before you can join.

Rules:

The Roleplay Rules (Lex Scaena)
To take part in ROMA roleplay (and to distinguish it from the general social), you MUST do the following:

I. Read and respect the 12 Tables (available under the land covenant window). These continue to be in effect regardless of roleplay status. Please pay special attention to the Display Names that are forbidden in ROMA (Clause )

II. All those who wish to roleplay MUST join Theatrum Romanum group. Contact Peter Woody about an invite.
III. Once you are invited to the Theatrum group, go to the Theatrum messageboard and create a character profile. (You may also want to mention the url for the profile in your SL profile).

IV. While roleplaying in ROMA you MUST either display the ‘*ROMA ROLEPLAYER*’ title from the Theatrum Romanum group, and/or a flip title that displays ‘*ROMA ROLEPLAYER*’ and your character name. Please note that you are NOT considered to be roleplaying without either displayed. It must be very clear to all that you are rolelplaying.

V. When speaking in roleplay mode, you may say something ‘out of character’ (OOC) by placing it within brackets “[[ ]]” or angle brackets “<< >>”. Keep roleplay conversations and experiences separate from non-roleplay ones.
VI. Enemies in roleplay should harbor no ill feelings outside of roleplay.

VII. Please note that the default experience of ROMA is not roleplay, it is social. Therefore not every ROMA event will be a roleplay event. Those that are roleplay events will be clearly marked and advertised as so. Roleplayers should feel free to ignore regular Citizens who are not roleplaying (or do not have their title/tag on). If you want to socialize with someone in roleplay mode, speak to them in OOC brackets.

VIII. When you take off your Theatrum group title or flip title, you have removed your roleplay persona. You are now only engaging with others in a social way.

IX. Within roleplay, no player should have anything done to them without consent (e.g. arrest/trial, being robbed, attacked etc.) No action can happen to another player that they do not agree to beforehand - either by private IM or out of character discussion. Any player trying to force the roleplay in such a way will be in violation of the rules.

X. ROMA is not a historical recreation sim. The Emperor Julian Augustus is not the same person as Julian the Apostate from the fourth century CE. ROMA is not ancient Rome. Instead, ROMA exists outside of the historical framework and exists on the Second Life grid, not ancient Italy. ROMA roleplay is its own community, loosely based on ancient Roman culture of the 2nd century CE. It has its own history and relationships with other roleplay cultures (such as Germanic tribes, Egyptians, Greeks, etc). It can be thought of as an alternate universe. Anachronisms will be tolerated. This is tremendous opportunity to develop a unique experience with ancient Roman culture and history.

XI. After every roleplay encounter in the sim, you are encouraged to ‘blog’ about it on the messageboard. In this way, everyone will be kept abreast of any roleplay plot developments.

XII We endeavor to act fairly, but violation of the Lex Scaena or the 12 Tables may result in a warning, fine, temporary banishment, or permanent banishment.

XIII Roleplaying gives you no special authority in the estate. 

XIV Roleplaying in the Subura or Ostia: If you are a Subura or Ostia plot renter, you have the ability to hold any event at any time on your plot, including roleplay events. You also control access to your plot. You are rex or regina of your plot (bound only by the renters agreement and the 12 Tables). We ask you, however, to uphold the Lex Scaena if your event is a roleplay event.

XV Roleplayers are allowed to choose any of the following for their roleplay persona:
Any civic profession (for example: Merchant, Blacksmith, Baker, Veteran, etc)
Any family role inside a Family Group (Domina, Paterfamilius, Cousin, etc) they belong to.
The following are forbidden unless approved by the Theatrum officers and allowed by the Emperor:
A rolelplay job or identity can reflect a sim ownership, government, or management role (for example: Ambassador, Consul, etc)

Any Imperial family connection (cousin to the Emperor, etc)

An existing Group role without prior membership in that group (Senator, Praetorian, etc)
You may want to observe roleplay before diving in yourself, to see how it is handled in ROMA.

At this time we have no desire to join with any other existing roleplay communities or other Roman themed lands around SL. ROMA roleplay is self contained within the ROMA estate. Actions done in other sims will have no effect on ROMA roleplay. Please remove all other land's roleplay gadgets and combat meters while in ROMA. We may amend or annotate the Lex Scaena at any time.

Feeling:


After experiencing the Roma sim, I feel like it could help students/adults conceptualize the feelings and ideas of the ancient Romans. When I teleported into other sims, I was still wearing my toga and I felt very proud to say, I participated  in the Roma sim. Staying in character was very easy, which means this sim has an effective educational design. I would recommend this sim to anyone that is interested in Roman culture.

Week 2 in Second Life

Wow, I never knew building a bag requires so much detail! Week 2 was a great introduction of the building to come. I'm just wondering, how long does it take to become a professional builder in Second Life? I really enjoyed designing my bag. I was engaged in the activity and discovered the use of multiple menu buttons. One thing I found interesting was creating a duplicate of an object. On that note, I'm off to practice building

Week 1 in Second Life

Week 1 in Second Life was a challenge. I needed to practice basic skills to navigate through the virtual world. The most frustrating was flying.  I am on a Mac so the commands are different, however once I started using the move pull out bar menu, running, flying, and walking became easier. My enjoyable moment was exploring the Great Wall of China because it almost seemed like I was there. The virtual world is very much a second life.
